Astronaut, military pilot (YG - military pilot), and educator, Neil Armstrong made history on July 20,
1969, by becoming the first man to walk on the moon.( YG - was the first in space)
Neil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, on August 5, 1930.(YG - It was also in the 20th century) After serving in the Korean War and then finishing college, he joined the organization that would become NASA (YG- Oct. 27, 1955 Gagarin was drafted into the Soviet army) He joined the astronaut program in 1962 and was command pilot for his first mission, Gemini VIII, in 1966.( YG - He was the commander of the first flight ) He was spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar mission, and became the first man to walk on the moon. Armstrong was decorated by 17 countries. He was the recipient of many special honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom; the Congressional Gold Medal; the Congressional Space Medal of Honor; the Explorers Club Medal; the Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy; the NASA Distinguished Service Medal; the Harmon International Aviation Trophy; the Royal Geographic Society's Gold Medal; the Federation Aeronautique Internationale's Gold Space Medal; the American Astronautical Society Flight Achievement Award; the Robert J. Collier Trophy; the AIAA Astronautics Award; the Octave Chanute Award; and the John J. Montgomery Award. Shortly after his death, his family released a statement: "For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."
